Polonium-218 is the first stop in the radon decay chain. Once radon gas (Rn-222) breaks down, it transforms into this highly radioactive metal.
Polonium-218 has a very short half-life (~3 minutes), but in that time it releases powerful alpha particles. Despite its brief existence, this makes it extremely dangerous to human health.
These alpha particles can attach to dust or aerosols, making them easy to inhale. Once in the lungs, they bombard tissues with radiation.
The danger lies not just in the radiation itself, but in how easily these particles become airborne and how readily they stick to other particles in your indoor air. When you breathe in dust or moisture droplets that carry Polonium-218, you're introducing a powerful radiation source directly into your lung tissue.
Even though Polonium-218 only survives for about 3 minutes, radon gas continuously produces new Polonium-218 particles. This creates a constant cycle of radioactive exposure in homes with elevated radon levels.
